movies

Leningrad Cowboys Go America is a 1989 road movie by Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki about the adventures of the Leningrad Cowboys, an eccentric band that travels to the United States to become successful, and combines their brand of polka music with various American styles as they make their way to Mexico.

World famous Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki's cult movie "Leningrad Cowboys go America" ('89) describes the fortunes and misadventures of a struggling Siberian rock band on their way from the tundra to America, eventually ending up in Mexico and on the local top ten chart. This hilarious road movie has been released in several countries around the world and was ranked #88 in Empire magazine's "The 100 Best Films of World Cinema" in 2010.

The sequel, "Leningrad Cowboys meet Moses" ('94), tells of the band's return from Mexico, via New York and through Europe, back to their native village in Siberia.

Besides all the feature films, Aki Kaurismäki has also directed a concert documentary "Leningrad Cowboys meet the Alexandrov Red Army Ensemble" plus several music shorts like "Rocky VI", "Thru the Wire", "L.A. Woman", "Those Were the Days" and "These Boots" featuring the Leningrad Cowboys.

Music Videos

The Leningrad Cowboys, a Finnish rock band famous for their outrageous style and tongue-in-cheek approach to rock ’n’ roll, have gained a cult following not only through their music but also through their unforgettable music videos. Blending surreal storytelling, deadpan humor, and their trademark look—towering pompadours and impossibly pointy shoes—their videos often parody rock clichés while celebrating them at the same time.

Many of these were directed in collaboration with acclaimed filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki, whose minimalist style perfectly complements the band’s absurdity, while more recent music video have been brought to life by german filmmaker Dirk Behlau, adding a fresh visual energy to their legacy.

Together, these works showcase the Leningrad Cowboys’ unique blend of satire, spectacle, and rock spirit.
